Skrewdriver - Freedom What Freedom + Bonus LP
The legendary Skrewdriver album “Freedom What Freedom” from 1992 is back – now in an edition with a total of 18 tracks! The album contains not only 11 songs from the original release, but also 7 bonus tracks from the “Hail The New Dawn” LP, which are sure to delight fans and collectors alike.
With “Freedom What Freedom” the band achieved a return to their former strength. After the rather mediocre albums “The Strong Survive” and “Live & Kicking”, Skrewdriver returned to their original, raw sound – with a line-up that hadn’t changed in years: Ian Stuart on vocals, Stigger on guitar, Jon Hickson on bass and John Burnley on drums. The multi-layered guitar playing is particularly noteworthy. Every solo is a delight, but always in harmony with the structure and emotional depth of the songs. The drummer shines with precise percussion, making the band's sound even more imposing and powerful.
The album is a passionate declaration against the suppression of freedom—be it by the growing police state, the loss of liberties, or the establishment—and thus more relevant than ever in times of woke excesses. Skrewdriver deliver their message uncompromisingly: Songs like "One Land (Re-unification)" celebrate the reunification of Germany, while "This Little Piggy" offers humor. Particularly noteworthy is the song "Stolz," whose German lyrics reflect the band's close connection to their German fans. In short, the album is an unmistakable manifesto by Skrewdriver—a homage to freedom, European identity, and resistance to the establishment.
Ian Stuart said in an interview at the time: "Basically, we sell more records in Germany than anywhere else. Since the Germans support us so much, I thought it was time to do something in German for them. I wrote the song in English, had a German friend translate it (Magnus Wagegg, Rest in Peace!) , recorded it on cassette so I could hear the accent and pronunciation, and then started singing. Besides, Germany probably has the fastest-growing skinhead scene in Europe, and the Germans have supported the band almost as long as the English. We've been signed to a German record label since 1984."
